Comparison

OpenClaw vs Hermes Agent

Two open-source, model-agnostic agents that both run as a service - separated by measured footprint and install time rather than by features.

Verdict

Close enough on paper that the specification sheet will not decide it: both are MIT, model-agnostic, speak MCP, and hold a gateway process open. What separates them is what they cost to run, and we measured it. Hermes is less than half the memory; OpenClaw installs five times faster.

What actually separates them

Measured cost, not capability. On the same 1 vCPU / 1 GB server: Hermes idles at 120 MB and takes about five minutes to install; OpenClaw idles at 278 MB and installs inside a minute. OpenClaw also grows to fill a bigger box - 293 MB on a 4 GB tier - so its footprint tracks the machine you give it.

OpenClaw

Self-hosted personal AI assistant that acts across the messaging channels you already use (WhatsApp/Telegram/Slack/Signal) with shell, browser, file and automation tools.

Hermes Agent

Self-improving open-source AI agent with persistent memory and learning loops that creates skills from experience; terminal interface plus messaging gateway (Telegram/Discord/Slack/WhatsApp/Signal).

Which should you pick?

Pick OpenClaw if…

You want multi-channel reach and the fastest path to a working box, and memory headroom is not tight.

Pick Hermes Agent if…

You want the lightest resident agent we have measured, and can wait out a slower install.

What this comparison does not settle

Both are ours to host, so weigh this page accordingly. The memory and install figures are first-party measurements you can reproduce; the framing of who should pick which is a judgement.
