Comparison

goose vs Claude Code

A Linux Foundation-stewarded, Apache-2.0 agent against a single-vendor proprietary one - compared on governance as much as features.

Verdict

Pick goose if the question keeping you up is who controls the tool. It is Apache-2.0, was built at Block and now sits with the Linux Foundation, runs against 15+ providers including local models, and speaks MCP natively. Claude Code is the more polished single-vendor product. On raw capability they are closer than the licences suggest; on governance they are not close at all.

What actually separates them

Governance. Foundation stewardship means no single company can retire it, relicense it, or change its terms unilaterally. That reads like a technicality right up until it is not - which is exactly what Gemini CLI users found out this year.

You want the smoother product today and accept the dependency that comes with it.

What this comparison does not settle

We host Claude Code and do not host goose. We have also not measured goose on our infrastructure, so there is no footprint figure for it here. Neither this page nor any table on it tells you which writes better code - we have not benchmarked output quality, and would rather say so than imply a ranking we cannot support.
